1.Background
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is seeking a highly proactive and motivated intern with a background in Water Management, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field to support ongoing research and policy analysis. The IWMI Internship Program offers an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience in technical and applied research related to water resource management, irrigation efficiency, agricultural sustainability, and climate change adaptation. This includes analyzing water use efficiency, evaluating water-saving irrigation technologies, and assessing the impact of water management practices on agricultural productivity. By integrating engineering principles with real-world policy challenges, the intern will contribute to evidence-based solutions for sustainable water management in agriculture. Lasting for a year, the program engages the interns in real-world research projects, technical skill-building, and networking with leading experts. Through applied research, data analysis, and field engagement, interns will develop the expertise needed for an impactful career in water resource management, environmental engineering, and sustainable agriculture.
2. Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct literature review from published papers, reports and grey literature, on various topics such as water management strategies, irrigation technologies, groundwater management, climate-smart agriculture, and water-energy-food nexus.
- Assist in the development of research tools for measuring water use efficiency and productivity.
- Support data collection in the field and experiments, related to irrigation systems, water quality assessment, and agricultural water use across Pakistan.
- Assist in hydrological data cleaning, processing, and analysis using computer programming language (e.g, Python, R, or others)
- Work under the guidance of the supervisor to conduct hydrological modeling and statistical analysis of water management data.
- Contribute to technical reports, research papers, policy briefs, and blogs for dissemination of project outputs.
- Assist in organizing stakeholder meetings, workshops, and policy dialogues.
- Participate in policy and technical knowledge forums, workshops, and meetings across Islamabad and project sites, while ensuring comprehensive documentation/notetaking of proceedings.
- Perform any other duties within the scope of the project, as required.
3. Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Completed Master’s degree in the last 06 months in Water Management, Agricultural Engineering or a related degree with a focus on hydrology or water resources.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills with a willingness to learn.
- Academic training and interest in conducting literature reviews, data collection, and analysis, with a willingness to learn.
- Familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
- Good skills in Python, R or other data analysis software, and a willingness to learn.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a research environment.
- Willingness to travel to project sites for meetings, fieldwork, and data collection.
4. Duration of the Assignment:
The intern will be hired for the above tasks for a period of one year at the IWMI Pakistan Liaison Office in Islamabad, with travel to Lahore or other project sites as required.
